Melbourne Family & Newborn photographer.
For the Families Who want To Remember how It Truly Felt.

Colours are a key element in photos. They help your family look beautifully cohesive and allow the focus to stay on the connection between you. I recommend sticking with neutral tones such as cream, brown, mustard, tan, white, olive and soft pastels. These shades work effortlessly in any environment and blend well together.

That said, I also love when families add a subtle pop of colour to bring a little personality to the mix. Think one person in a bold stripe, a red or soft yellow accent, or a touch of denim. Just one colour that compliments the rest, nothing too dark or overpowering. It is all about balance and keeping things soft, natural and true to you.

Cue the music, pop a bottle, go exploring, dance in the desert, get comfortable, do your thang. We’ll provide prompts to help you get comfortable (no need to worry about what to do with your hands), but mostly we’ll just hang out and let the magic happen.

Textures and layers add an extra element to your photos. Think linen, lace and chunky knits! Whether it is a crochet blanket for your newborn portrait or a cardigan over your shirt or dress. Natural fabrics like linen give your photos a soft and organic feel.

Compliment and coordinate, but skip the matchy-matchy. We want everyone to feel like themselves, with their own style and personality shining through. Choose a colour palette you love, then mix it up with different tones and textures. Think soft layers, cosy knits, denim, linen, anything that moves and feels good on you.

Neutrals always photograph beautifully, but don’t be afraid to add a pop of colour, like a red beanie on your toddler or a bold cardigan for Mum. The key is comfort and confidence. Wear what makes you feel beautiful, relaxed, and most like you.

Compliment & coordinate

A Few Things to Avoid, as much as I want you to feel like you, there are a couple of things that don’t translate well in photos. Try to steer clear of dark colours like black, navy, and deep greens, blues or greys, they tend to lose all detail and can feel a bit harsh in natural light.

Colours that do work with neutrals are red, mustard, yellow, medium blue & green.

Skip logos, bold prints, and cartoon characters too. While they might be adorable in real life, they can be super distracting in your images and take the focus away from the connection and emotion we’re capturing.

And lastly, I recommend removing smartwatches and leaving behind any over-the-top jewellery. Clean and simple always lets the connection shine through.
