How to Survive the First 6 Weeks as a New Parent | Melbourne Newborn Photographer

Motherhood, Newborn

Sep 15

Those early weeks with a newborn are beautiful, messy, and exhausting all at once. You’re learning how to care for a tiny human while running on little sleep, and the world feels completely new. As a Melbourne newborn photographer (and a mum who’s been there twice), I know firsthand that those first six weeks can feel like a blur — but there are small things you can do to help you slow down, find your rhythm, and actually enjoy this fleeting season.

1. Lower the Bar — Your Only Job Is to Heal and Bond

Forget the pressure to have a spotless home or a perfect routine right now. These first few weeks are about healing, adjusting, and bonding with your baby. Give yourself permission to say “no,” order takeaway, and stay in pyjamas all day. If all you’ve managed is feeding your baby and having a shower, you’re doing beautifully.

2. Accept (and Ask for) Help

If someone offers to drop off a meal or fold your laundry, say yes. Your family and friends want to support you — let them. Even small things, like a neighbour grabbing groceries or a friend watching the baby so you can nap, can make a huge difference.

3. Create a Simple Feeding and Sleep Space

You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect nursery. A comfy chair, a side table for water and snacks, and a place to change your baby are enough. Keeping things simple makes those endless night feeds much easier.

4. Take Care of Yourself Too

It’s easy to forget about your own needs when you’re caring for a newborn. Keep water nearby, eat snacks often, and rest whenever you can. Remember, a well-fed and rested parent (even in tiny increments!) is better able to care for their baby.

5. Get Outside for Fresh Air

Even a short walk around the block can help you feel human again. The change of scenery, fresh air, and a bit of sunshine can do wonders for your mood and energy levels — and babies love it too.

6. Capture the Tiny Details Before They Change

Those curled-up newborn stretches, sleepy yawns, and tiny fingers will change so quickly. You might feel too tired to think about photos now, but these are the moments you’ll want to look back on forever. This is why I love offering in-home newborn photography in Melbourne — I come to you, so you don’t have to worry about packing bags or leaving the house. The session is calm, baby-led, and designed to capture your family as you are in these early days.

In Summary

The first six weeks with your baby are a mix of chaos, cuddles, and learning. Give yourself grace, accept help, and soak up these tiny moments — they’ll pass faster than you can imagine.

If you’d love to preserve this season, I’d be honoured to photograph your growing family. As a Melbourne newborn photographer, I specialise in relaxed, in-home sessions that capture your story with warmth and authenticity.
